Are You Smarter Than an Interactive Ad?

Advertising on the web is getting smarter. And no, I don't mean "smart" as in witty and entertaining (like the Most Interesting Man in the World), I mean "smart" as in the advertising that knows a little bit about who I am, and what I'm into. It might even ask for my feedback (like Hulu ads do), and then take what I say into consideration the next time I'm served an ad. These type of ads are driven by a concept called behavioral targeting.

A Little Privacy Please?

Every time Facebook makes some sort of security update, like deciding to categorize users' location, interests and friends as public information, people get upset. Time to Mobilize

People are spending more and more time online these days, and more often they’re doing it on their phones. The average American spends approximately 4 hours per day online, which is an 81% increase from 3 years ago. That same person will also spend approximately 5 hours per month browsing online with their smartphone. Smartphones have dominated the tech news headlines over the past couple years. In 2009 alone it’s estimated that smartphones accounted for 14% of all mobile device sales and by 2013 that number should be close to 40%. Wi-Fi hotspots saw 35% of connections coming from smartphones, a 15% increase over the previous year. Within a few years we should see smartphones replace laptops as the dominant mobile device in the market. You don’t need to be a MENSA member to understand the type of growth these numbers imply.

So I’m thinking about getting rid of my cable. I don’t know about you, but I don’t really watch a lot of TV anymore, at least not on television… Sorry Comcast! Why pay for cable and Internet when I can just stream online for free? But it turns out Comcast still might be making a sweet buck off of me anyway (other than the Internet) with their recent acquisition of NBC, which includes one of their most promising online ventures, Hulu.com. Despite their excellent advertising structure, will looming subscription models cause Hulu to become a test case for the rebirth of media on the Internet?
