Can Agencies Work Together?

While the agency world has removed itself from the full service offerings mentality, (for the most part), there is an increasing desire for agencies to work together on projects. Whether it’s an out sourced model, or a true collaboration, they continue to try to find ways to provide more to clients, while paying less for employee overhead.

So You Want an E-Commerce Site, Now What?

To the average joe, an e-commerce website may seem simple. You get what you see… That homepage slide show goes from right to left, and yup, the numbers change when it slides, and when you click on a slide it takes you to that featured product… Simple, right? Wrong. How many seconds in between each slide? Can the client control this promotional space themselves? What happens when you click on the “Learn More” link; does it go to the product, or it’s category landing page? Is the slide show using JavaScript or Flash? See, what is simple to the eye is far more complex to us. Simple tasks are few and far between in web design and development, and this is especially true when working with an e-commerce website.

Does Your Web Agency Understand Your Business?

One of the things we pride ourselves on around here is our ability to really drill down and find out what makes each client special at the beginning of the relationship. Not in that warm and fuzzy, “Mom always said I was special” kind of way, but in the “I need to get to the top of my industry and stay ahead of the competition” sort of way.

The Holidays Are Here... Is Your Business Prepared?

The holiday season has arrived. Thanksgiving marks the start of an exciting and fun period for everyone. From a work standpoint, it marks one of the busiest and stressful periods… at least in our industry. I find it interesting that depending on what industry you’re in, the holiday season can be pleasant or an absolute nightmare. Every year we feel the holiday rush in a big way. That includes putting our Five Year Anniversary Party together, new marketing initiatives prepared for the New Year, as well as clients pushing to launch websites prior to the holidays.

If You Just Build It, They Won't Come

Your company is not The Field of Dreams. If you're looking to bring Ray Liotta and a team of dead baseball players back to life for some pickup games in your backyard, then by all means, hit up Kevin Costner for some guidance. But, if you are a little saner than that, and are instead looking increase your web traffic (and your sales and leads along with it) then don't think that this ultra-cliched movie line applies to launching a new website.

Scope Creep: Halloween Edition

What better time to discuss Scope Creep than around the holiday known for mysterious spirits, unseen ghosts, sneaky goblins, chainsaw touting villains, and pale, dark haired vampires who want nothing more than to suck the budget out of you. Setting an accurate scope in web design and development, and not exceeding that scope, can sometimes feel like trying to run away from Michael Myers. Even though you’re running at top speeds and he’s walking in a deliberately slow fashion, that bastard is always on your heels about to kill your ass.

An Effective Sales "Team." Does it Exist?

Since the inception of O3 World we have had sales representatives, business development people, sales consultants, and sales assistants come... and after too long, eventually go after a period of time without success. We have tried all sorts of different salary set ups, and commission plans and incentive programs to spark ideas, create enthusiasm, and hopefully finalize some deals in the process. And all of those efforts have absolutely, positively, (not even sort of), but totally, failed.

Wanted: Conferences that Don't Waste My Time

Registration to an over-attended, over-hyped, weekend long social media conference in Miami: $775. Flight and hotel to Miami for said conference: $906. One day of work lost for not being in the office, plus meals for the weekend on the company dime: $1,500+ (estimate... depends on how much your time is worth, and assuming you don’t want to eat Taco Bell for three straight days). A stack of shiny new business cards and pamphlets from numerous first (and likely last) time acquaintances and glorified conference speakers: Useless.

The Interactive Project Manager Recipe

Project management in the advertising industry is an often misunderstood and under appreciated position. At their best, project managers can streamline communications between clients and company staff, ensure time lines stay on track, and keep the project scope in check. If they’re really good, they can even create new business opportunities within the client relationship. Although at their worst, they complicate the process, have a hard time explaining the needs of the clients effectively, suffer from multi tasking inefficiency, piss off the production staff and can bruise the relationship with a client.

The Value of Internships

Which comes first, the job or the experience? If you ask an employer, the answer would be experience but if you ask a job seeker, the answer would be the job. What is my solution to this conundrum? An internship.
