What's With that Name, Anyway?

The Rule of Thirds

The Rule of Thirds. The Holy Trinity. The Heat lineup. The number three has a pretty important place in human history and the world around us. Coincidence? Like any company with a name that seems a little... out there, we often get asked by potential clients and curious onlookers about the meaning behind our name. There’s actually a pretty sweet story there.

Before we get to all that though, lets look at the practical application of the name (and the number) to our business today. First, our company really breaks down into three distinct parts: creative+design, development+technology, and marketing+project management. The three departments all march to the beat of a different drum, but they work side by side in the trenches. When a new project comes in it’s all hands on deck to get everyone familiar with what’s going on and how their unique talents apply. Designers start working on the creative that’s going to blow your audience away. Developers start coding the magic that you probably never see. The project managers and marketing guys make nice with your team, keep you updated, and make sure everything runs on schedule. When a finished project launches, we all come back together to recap, review, and listen to key stakeholders from each department talk a little about unique challenges and creative solutions that were applied.

It’s not just the departments that happen to fit the theme. As our business has grown and evolved, we’ve identified three key areas where we can best put our expertise to use: content-managed websites, e-commerce solutions, and mobile/tablet development. We work with clients in a variety of industries and use all sorts of technologies and languages, but our projects usually fit into those three broad categories. It’s been a nice balance. We’re specialized, but not limited by constraining ourselves to one particular industry. Our range of services is broad, but not so much so that we can’t innovate and be category leaders. Sometimes, a lesson learned from creating a tablet-based sales tool gives us unique insight into a B2C e-commerce site, or vice-versa. It’s a great system.

Finally, the name itself. For those of you that have fuzzy memories of high school chemistry, O3 is the shorthand notation for the molecule ozone. It’s three parts oxygen, and it’s lighter than air. See where this is going? Three departments, three specialties, elevating your business... Yeah.

As for the story about the origin of the name? Well, you kinda had to be there. If you’re really curious though, we’ll buy you a beer and tell you all about it. Just let us know when to set it up. Of course, you can also get in touch if you want to talk about any of that design, development, and marketing stuff too. We’re friendly like that.
